I offer a range of one-to-one, small group and larger group learning experiences, for children who are home educated, as well as workshops offering guidance and teaching strategies for parents who facilitate learning at home. I worked as a reading leader in a primary school where I trained teachers and staff to teach reading and writing using the Ruth Miskin Read Write Inc phonics programme. I also had the pleasure of learning from Pie Corbet who is one of my literacy heroes. With growth mindset at the heart of my teaching philosophy, I encourage children to discover things by themselves or collaboratively and value effort, persistence and learning from mistakes.

We have a venue from which to teach groups of children however we can accommodate teaching from your home or an alternative venue.

Phonics group for little learners starting their journey as readers

Children will learn:

  • To listen and distinguish between sounds
  • To recognise the one diagraph sounds e.g. s,a,t,p,i,n,
  • To recognise rhyme
  • To form the initial letters
  • To segment and blend

The cost of this per session is £8 per child with a minimum of six children.

Reading and writing group for children who can segment and blend independently and are just starting to read

Children will learn:

  • To read with comprehension
  • To read with expression and intonation
  • To write in sentences applying their phonics
  • Strategies for tackling the high frequency words to which phonics don’t completely apply
  • Recognise and use basic punctuation

The cost of this per session is £8 per child with a minimum of six children.

A  group for children who can write confidently using finger spaces, capital letters and full-stops

Children will learn:

  • To love writing
  • To use figurative language
  • To write poems
  • To plan stories using picture maps
  • To write stories
  • To plan and write non-fictional texts

The cost of this per session is £8 per child with a minimum of six children.

An opportunity for children to come up their own question to discuss

Children learn to:

  • Write different types of questions
  • Understand the difference between open and closed questions
  • Use the language of debate
  • Think critically
  • Listen with respect to views and opinions different from their own

The cost of this per session is £8 per child with a minimum of six children.

Children will learn to:

  • Recognise, understand and write numbers 0-100
  • Songs to make counting fun
  • Count objects up to 100
  • Solve number sentences including amounts totaling 20
  • Recognise the symbols + – = ‹ › and what they mean
  • Partition and recombine numbers
  • Carry out calculations using props

The cost of this per session is £8 per child with a minimum of six children.

For children who know and recognise number 1-100 and can do all of the above

Children will learn to:

  • Use and understand multiplication and division
  • Use informal written methods of calculations (number lines)
  • Multiply and divide any whole number by 10

Children will learn:

  • To understand and work with percentages, decimals and fractions
  • Formal methods of calculation
  • Problem solving
  • Application of their knowledge of number
  • To develop mental strategies and shortcuts
  • To understand the links between mathematical concepts

Children will develop:

  • An awareness of their emotions and bodily sensations
  • An aware of their attention
  • Their ability to listen
  • An understanding of their potential as learners to develop and improve through practise
  • Their ability to focus

Workshops for parents can be arranged offering strategies to teach and support their children

These will include:

  • Initial phonics
  • Teaching number to beginners
  • Making multiplication fun, linking to place value and fractions
  • Teaching writing
  • Teaching fun ways to teach comprehension and bring books to life

The cost of this per session is £8 per adult with a minimum of five adults.
